The hardiest variety of lavender, English Lavender is the perfect perennial herb for any English garden. It is adored by bees and butterflies and has an incredible scent that helps us to relax and drift off to sleep.
Lavender is often used as a culinary flavouring for biscuits, jams and vinegars.
How delightful would a lovely lavender hedge be in your kitchen garden or allotment?! This variety grows to around 75cm – 90cm in height.
Lavender seeds should be sown in trays or modules at around 20°c from late winter through to summer. Germination can be eratic and the seeds may benefit from stratification. Pot the seedlings on when they are large enough to handle and plant out after the risk of frost has passed.

Lavender originated in the mediterranean and was first brought to England during Roman Times. English Lavender is the most prominent due to its high concentration of essential oils.
Lavender has been used for a multitude of things. It is a natural antiseptic and was often used during the war to help wounded soldiers.
Many of us associate lavender with its calming, soothing properties – it can send us off to sleep and really helps to relieve a tension headache.
It’s dried flowers will help to freshen clothing and repel moths. It is also great as an insect repellent.
French farmers will often allow their lambs to graze on lavender to improve the tenderness and flavour of the meat!
