Claytona Perfoliata – 0.6g – Approx 900 Seeds
You may have heard of Winter Purslane. It is often called Claytona or Miners Lettuce.
The name miners lettuce came about because during the California Gold rush in the mid 1800s the miners often ate it to help prevent scurvy.
Did you know it was brought to Kew Gardens in London in 1794?!
Winter Purslane is a really good source of Vitamin C which is often much needed during the winter months.
The plant grows like a rosette and has pretty, heart shaped leaves. You can harvest the leaves individually or cut the whole plant at the base. The leaves are more succulent than a lettuce leaf but they are still lovely as a salad leaf. You can also cook them just as you would spinach. The delicate flowering shoots are also edible.
It does self seed easily but can easily be pulled if you have too much as the roots are very shallow.
Sowing Instructions:
Sow in trays or modules under cover from September to March at 8-12°c. Plant out around 10cm apart when the plants are large enough to handle and have developed a good root system. Will benefit from protection over winter. Harvest single leaves or the whole plant as needed.
