Chard is a hardy vegetable which is very easy to grow.
Our Chard ‘Fireworks’ is a stunning mix of red, pink, orange, yellow and whites stems creating some real impact in the vegetable garden!
Young leaves can be used as a salad leaf or cooked like spinach when they are fully grown. The stems can also be cooked.
Sow chard seeds from spring to summer. Harvest the leaves from early summer through to winter.
Plants left in the ground during the winter will grow again in spring for a final harvest before going to seed.

Chard has been around since ancient times – Aristole, the Greek Philosopher mentioned a red stalked chard in the 4th Century.
It is closely related to the beet and it originates from a form of wild beet that grew in the Mediterranean
Often called Swiss chard it is actually from Sicily but it was a Swiss botanist who determined its scientific name in the 19th Century.
In ancient times it was used as a medicine to treat allergies and constipation.
It is loaded with Vitamins A, K, C as well as Magnesium and Iron.
It is mostly grown as a vegetable crop but sometimes grown as an ornamental due to the vibrant colours.
