Semi Evergreen Perennial

Height: up to 60cm -80cm

Hyssop is an attractive perennial herb which has both edible flowers and leaves. A member of the mint family, it tastes like mint with added floral notes.

It is super attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinators and makes a beautiful hedge or edging plant.

The flowers can be used in salads but use sparingly as the flavour is quite powerful!

Hyssop seeds can be sown in trays or modules indoors at around 20°c. Do not exclude light. Pot on when the seedlings are large enough to handle and plant out after the risk of frost has passed. Alternatively direct sow from mid spring to early summer at around 45cm apart.

Seed Story

Hyssop is a member of the mint family and is native to the mediterranean and has been cultivated in European gardens for 600 years.

The Romans used hyssop to protect themselves from the plague.

It has a cleansing effect and is often used for spiritual cleansing.

Hyssop can be a good companion plant for cabbages to deter cabbage white fly.

The flowers can be used in a tea to help sore throats and respiratory problems and the leaves have antiseptic properties.

Did you know that the mould that produces penicillin grows on hyssop leaves?
