 A hardy annual that is really easy to grow. 

Also known as the pot marigold, the calendula flower is orange and daisy like and grows to between 30 – 60cm.

It has a long flowering period and will self seed easily.

Calendula is popular amongst beneficial insects like ladybirds and hoverflies and makes a great companion plant for a number of vegetables.

The petals are edible and can be used fresh in salads or dried as a substitute for saffron.

Calendula is popular for making homemade balms, creams and salves due to its healing properties.

Growing calendula is easy. It can be sown in pots or be direct sown throughout the growing season. Early and late sowings will benefit from protection. It will flower through to late summer/early autumn.

Calendula is one of the oldest of all cultivated flowers

It is affectionately called the poor mans saffron and can be used to flavour soups and stews.

Calendula has been cultivated in England since the 1200’s and there was even a calendula potion that existed in 16th Century which claimed to reveal fairies

In India calendula flowers are considered sacred and have been used to decorate statues and images of Hindu Gods

Calendula has antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and makes a great natural product for bites, sunburn and wound care.

Calendula repels whitefly from tomatoes and can help attract aphids away from beans.
