Celeriac ‘Monarch’ is a large, high quality celeriac with a mild, nutty taste. It’s smooth, firm white roots have fantastic storage qualities.

The celeriac seeds should be sown in modules in spring at around 18°c. Pot the seedlings on when they are large enough to handle and plant out around May. The base of the plant should be just above soil level and the plants should be spaced around 30cm apart. Harvest from mid summer to mid autumn.

Seed Story

The history of celery dates back to ancient times. Celery leaves were found in the garlands in the tomb of Tutankhamun and there are references in ancient Greece of horses grazing on wild celery in Troy and Odyssey.

Depending on the cultivar you will eat either the stalks (like our ‘Tall Uath’), the leaves (celery leaf), or the bulbous root (celeriac). Celery seeds can also be ground into a powder and used as a spice.

The name celery has come about as celery has become part of our cuisine and comes from the French céleri

Celeriac, is also known as Celery root and is one of the oldest root vegetables.

The most classic use for celeriac is in the famous French dish; celeri remoulade.
