Kelvedon wonder is a high yielding, early variety that produces succulent, tasty peas in double pods.

This is a great variety for container growing and can be sown successionally.

Kelvedon wonder has good resistance to pea wilt and has a good tolerance to powdery mildew.

Sow the seeds in shallow trenches approximately 5cm deep and 5cm apart in the spring. Pick the pods regularly for a continuous harvest. This variety can also be sown undercover in autumn for overwintering.

Seed Story

Peas are native to the Mediterranean region and there is evidence of them from ancient times in the middle east where they were mainly grown for their dried seeds. Garden peas that are popular today came into cultivation in the 17th century.

Gregor Mendel, an Austrian monk, spent eight years studying peas in his monastery garden, specifically the inheritance of genetic traits. His experiments lead to his ‘Theory of Inheritance’ which forms the basis of all genetics!

Norse mythology described peas as having been a gift of the god Thor that should only be eaten on a Thursday which was his names day.

Folklore says that to find 9 peas in a pod were lucky – a superstition that many hold true to this day!

Did you know that peas can talk?!  Peas can communicate with other pea plants in the same soil via their roots. If one plant is suffering from drought for example it can tell another who can then prepare itself
