Blue Delikatess is a stunning variety with smooth, purple skin and crisp white flesh. It is slow to go woody and has good bolt resistance. The leaves can even be eaten like kale!
This is ideal as an early variety but also grown as a main crop.
We love to eat Kohl Rabi grated raw into salads and coleslaws!
Sow the seeds in modules from mid spring to mid summer and plant out from May at around 20cm apart. The seeds can also be direct sown during the same period. Harvest when the bulbs are between the size of a golf ball and a tennis ball and sow successionally for a continuous harvest.

Kohl Rabi is an unusual looking vegetable but so delicious and definitely well worth growing!
It’s name comes from the German ‘Kohl’ which means cabbage and ‘Rube’ which means turnip. The group name of gongylodes means ’roundish’ in Greek.
The earliest mention of Kohl Rabi was in 1554 by the botanist Matthiolus who wrote that “it had come lately into Italy”. By the end of the 16th century it was being grown throughout Northern Europe and reached the USA in the 1800’s.
Like cauliflower, broccoli, kale and sprouts it’s origins can be traced back to the wild cabbage.
Kohl Rabi is a great source of potassium, Vitamin C, fibre and antioxidants and is well worth growing!
