Coriander is one of the oldest herbs on record. It was mentioned by Hippocrates in the 5th Century and is recorded in the Bible.
Coriander, often called Chinese Parsley, or Cilantro in the US, is related to carrots, parsley and celery. It is widely cultivated in Southern Europe and Asia. The coriander seed is a key ingredient in the botanicals used to make Gin.
The oldest archeological find of coriander is in the Nahal Hemar cave in Israel and it was also found in the cave of Tutankhamen.
In Chinese medicine the leaves of coriander are used to stimulate appetite and promote digestion
The Romans introduced Coriander to Europe where it was often used alongside vinegar and cumin to preserve meat.
