Seed Story

Chard has been around since ancient times – Aristole, the Greek Philosopher mentioned a red stalked chard in the 4th Century.

It is closely related to the beet and it originates from a form of wild beet that grew in the Mediterranean

Often called Swiss chard it is actually from Sicily but it was a Swiss botanist who determined its scientific name in the 19th Century.

In ancient times it was used as a medicine to treat allergies and constipation.

It is loaded with Vitamins A, K, C as well as Magnesium and Iron.

It is mostly grown as a vegetable crop but sometimes grown as an ornamental due to the vibrant colours.
